The term Immune system via paracrine signaling and cell-cell contact refers to the primary mechanisms by which immune cells communicate and coordinate their activities. Paracrine signaling involves the secretion of soluble mediators, such as cytokines and chemokines, which act on nearby cells to modulate the local immune environment (Alberts et al., 2002). Cell-cell contact, also known as juxtacrine signaling, requires direct physical interaction between membrane-bound ligands and receptors, a process exemplified by the formation of the immunological synapse between T cells and antigen-presenting cells (Murphy & Weaver, 2016; Dustin, 2014). These interactions are fundamental for antigen recognition, lymphocyte costimulation, and the regulation of effector functions. Dysregulation of these signaling modes is a hallmark of many pathologies, including chronic inflammatory diseases and the immune evasion strategies employed by tumors. Because this description encompasses thousands of distinct proteins and complex physiological processes, it does not constitute a single, discrete therapeutic target for drug development (Nature Reviews Drug Discovery, 2023).
