Desensitization to specific allergens, or allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT), is a medical treatment designed to reduce allergic reactions by gradually training the immune system to tolerate specific allergens. This involves changes in mast cell/basophil activity, T cell populations (increased Tregs), and B cell antibody production (IgE to IgG4/IgA shift).
Gradual exposure to allergen to induce tolerance through shifts in immune cell populations and antibody production. Key mechanisms include: 1) early mast cell/basophil desensitization, 2) expansion of regulatory T cells (Tregs), 3) decreased IgE and increased IgG4/IgA production.
