Desensitization of the immune system through controlled exposure is a therapeutic approach used to reduce or eliminate hypersensitivity reactions (such as allergies) by gradually introducing increasing amounts of an allergen or antigen to the patient. This process aims to retrain the immune system's response, promoting tolerance and reducing pathological reactions upon future exposures. The mechanisms involve early desensitization of mast cells/basophils, intermediate-phase expansion of regulatory T cells, and a late-phase shift in antibody production from IgE to IgG4/IgA.
