The immune system can be modulated to induce tolerance to Ambrosia artemisiifolia (common ragweed) allergens through allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT). This process retrains the immune system to avoid a pathological response upon exposure to ragweed pollen. AIT involves gradual administration of increasing allergen doses to promote regulatory pathways over inflammatory ones.
Allergen-specific immunotherapy induces regulatory pathways involving dendritic cells and regulatory T cells, leading to reduced reactivity to ragweed allergens. IL-10 and TGF-β contribute to the maintenance of tolerance.
