Immune system activation via cytokine induction refers to the process by which immune cells release cytokines—small, secreted proteins that act as signaling molecules—to regulate and coordinate the body’s immune response. Cytokines are essential for both initiating and modulating inflammation, recruiting immune cells to sites of infection or injury, and orchestrating communication between different cell types within the immune system
Cytokine induction is typically triggered when pattern recognition receptors on innate immune cells detect pathogen-associated molecular patterns. This leads to rapid synthesis and secretion of various cytokines. The released cytokines bind to their respective receptors on other immune or nonimmune cells (“key-and-lock” mechanism), transmitting signals that: - Activate gene expression programs - Promote further secretion of additional mediators - Drive cellular differentiation or proliferation This creates an amplification loop: initial signals recruit more responders who then produce more cytokines—a process central in both effective immunity and pathological “cytokine storms” if unregulated
