Activation of the immune system via release of tumor-associated antigens is a foundational concept underpinning several modern cancer immunotherapies. It leverages natural processes whereby dying cancer cells provide a source of recognizable targets for both innate and adaptive arms of host defense. Tumor-associated antigens are released from dying tumor cells, taken up by antigen-presenting cells (APCs), processed and presented on MHC molecules. This leads to the activation of T lymphocytes, particularly CD8+ cytotoxic T cells, which recognize and kill tumor cells expressing those antigens.
