Immune system antigen-epitope interaction

Overview

Immune system antigen-epitope interactions refer to the biochemical recognition of specific molecular patterns, known as epitopes, by the components of the adaptive immune system, such as antibodies and T-cell receptors (Janeway's Immunobiology, 9th edition). This process is central to the body's ability to mount a specific defense against pathogens and to distinguish self from non-self (NIH, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases). Unlike a discrete molecular target like a single enzyme or receptor, this entry describes a broad class of interactions that form the basis of vaccinology and immunotherapy. Drugs targeting these interactions include vaccines, which provide the immune system with specific epitopes to induce long-term immunity, and monoclonal antibodies, which are engineered to bind to specific epitopes on target cells or viruses (Nature Reviews Immunology, 2018). Because this represents a functional category of interactions across many different proteins and cells, it is not classified as a single therapeutic target but rather a mechanism of action or a therapeutic strategy.

Mechanism of action

Modulation of immune recognition through the presentation of synthetic or derived epitopes to elicit an immune response, or the use of exogenous antibodies to bind specific epitopes for neutralization or recruitment of effector functions.
