Immune system function represents the integrated activity of biological structures and processes within an organism that protects against disease. It encompasses the innate immune system, providing immediate non-specific responses, and the adaptive immune system, which develops highly specific memory-based responses to pathogens (National Institutes of Health, 2023). This system is essential for identifying "self" versus "non-self" and for the surveillance and elimination of malignant cells (StatPearls, 2023). Proper function involves a coordinated effort between various cell types, including lymphocytes, neutrophils, and macrophages, as well as signaling molecules like cytokines. Dysregulation of immune function is central to a wide array of conditions, including autoimmune disorders, chronic inflammation, and hypersensitivity reactions. In the context of oncology, the immune system's ability to recognize tumor antigens is a primary focus of immunotherapy (PubMed, 2022). Because it describes a broad physiological state rather than a discrete protein or nucleic acid, it is not classified as a single therapeutic target in drug discovery. Instead, drug development focuses on specific molecular components within the system, such as kinases, receptors, or checkpoints, to modulate overall immune activity.
