Immunologic adjuvants are substances used in combination with vaccine antigens to enhance, accelerate, or prolong antigen-specific immune responses. Adjuvants exert effects through several mechanisms, such as promoting antigen uptake and presentation by APCs, inducing the secretion of cytokines, recruiting immune cells, and modulating T and B cell responses to strengthen both innate and adaptive immunity. Common adjuvants include aluminum salts, oil emulsions, and PAMP-based agents.
