Immunoglobulins, also known as antibodies, are glycoprotein molecules that serve as critical components of the immune system. These complex proteins are produced by plasma cells and play an essential role in recognizing and binding to specific antigens, such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi, to aid in their destruction. They exist in five main classes (IgG, IgM, IgA, IgD, and IgE), each with distinct functions in the humoral immune response. Immunoglobulins can be therapeutic targets as well as therapeutic agents (e.g. monoclonal antibodies).
Monoclonal antibodies: Target specific antigens or receptors to neutralize their activity or induce cell death. IVIG: Provides passive immunity and modulates the immune system through various mechanisms, including Fc receptor interactions and complement modulation.
