Igβ, also known as CD79b, is a transmembrane protein and a crucial component of the B cell receptor (BCR) complex. It forms a heterodimer with Igα (CD79a), and together they are essential for both the surface expression and signaling functions of the BCR in B lymphocytes. Upon antigen binding to mIg, ITAMs in both Igα and Igβ become phosphorylated. This phosphorylation recruits downstream effectors such as Syk kinase. Both chains are required for proper maturation signals and allelic exclusion. The complex mediates internalization of bound antigen for processing and presentation to T cells.
