Immunoglobulin E (IgE)

Target
IgE
Molecular classification
Immunoglobulin, Antibody
01

Overview

Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is a class of antibody found exclusively in mammals. It plays a central role in allergic reactions and defense against certain parasitic infections. IgE mediates immediate hypersensitivity reactions, commonly known as type I hypersensitivity, which underlie most allergic diseases. IgE contributes to immune defense against helminthic parasites and may also play roles against protozoan parasites. Medications targeting the effects or production of IgE help manage conditions where excessive or inappropriate activation via the IgE pathway leads to disease manifestations.

02

Mechanism of action

Monoclonal antibodies neutralize circulating IgE; antihistamines/antileukotrienes block downstream mediators; corticosteroids suppress broad inflammation.

Safety considerations

Elevated IgE levels can indicate sensitization but do not always correlate with clinical symptoms.Extremely high or undetectable IgE levels are linked to various health problems.Potential for anaphylaxis
