Immunoglobulin E and Immunoglobulin G4 are two distinct classes of antibodies produced by B cells as part of the adaptive immune system. Immunoglobulin E antibody (IgE) is specialized for defense against parasitic infections and is a central effector in allergic reactions, binding to high-affinity Fcε receptors on mast cells and basophils, triggering release of inflammatory mediators[2][4][6]. Immunoglobulin G4 antibody (IgG4) is one of four IgG subclasses, notable for unusual structural features including Fab-arm exchange, which results in bispecificity and reduced capacity for immune activation; IgG4 is primarily involved in dampening immune responses and is implicated in immune tolerance mechanisms, as well as in IgG4-related diseases, a class of chronic inflammatory conditions[1]. Elevated levels of either isotype can serve as a biomarker for specific diseases, and each has been targeted therapeutically in conditions ranging from allergy to autoimmunity[1][2][4][6][7].
