Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies specific for the benzylpenicilloyl determinant are immune proteins produced in response to the major antigenic determinant formed when penicillin (specifically benzylpenicillin or penicillin G) reacts with proteins in the body. This reaction creates a benzylpenicilloyl group, which is recognized by the immune system as foreign, leading to sensitization and potential allergic reactions upon subsequent exposures. These IgE antibodies mediate immediate-type (Type I) hypersensitivity reactions to penicillin, such as urticaria, angioedema, or anaphylaxis. Detection of these antibodies is crucial for diagnosing penicillin allergy.
