Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies specific for Bouteloua gracilis (Blue grama grass) pollen allergens are protective proteins produced by the immune system, typically in response to allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) (Shamji & Durham, 2017). In individuals sensitized to Blue grama grass, exposure to pollen allergens normally triggers an IgE-mediated allergic response, leading to symptoms of allergic rhinitis or asthma (Weber, 2007). However, the induction of specific IgG antibodies, particularly the IgG4 subclass, serves to neutralize these allergens before they can bind to IgE on mast cells and basophils (Akdis & Akdis, 2011). This "blocking" mechanism is a primary goal of immunotherapy, as it effectively reduces the inflammatory response and provides long-term desensitization (Shamji & Durham, 2017). Consequently, these IgG antibodies are not therapeutic targets themselves but are critical biomarkers used to evaluate the efficacy of grass pollen extracts and other immunotherapeutic agents (NIH, 2022). These antibodies are induced by the administration of standardized or non-standardized pollen extracts, which aim to shift the immune profile from a Th2-driven allergic state to a Th1 or Treg-driven tolerant state. Monitoring the levels of these antibodies helps clinicians determine the patient's immunological response to treatment and adjust dosages accordingly.
