Overview

Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies specific for Phoenix dactylifera (date palm) pollen allergens are key components of the immune response to date palm pollen, a significant aeroallergen in arid and semi-arid regions (PMID: 12144480). These antibodies, particularly the IgG4 subclass, are primarily induced during allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) and serve as 'blocking antibodies.' They function by competing with allergen-specific IgE for binding to pollen allergens such as Pho d 2 (a profilin), thereby inhibiting the cross-linking of IgE on the surface of mast cells and basophils (PMID: 15248858). This inhibition prevents the release of inflammatory mediators like histamine, which are responsible for symptoms of allergic rhinitis and asthma (PMID: 19435115). In clinical practice, the measurement of these IgG antibodies is used as a biomarker to monitor the efficacy and immunological shift of patients undergoing desensitization treatments. While not a drug target in the traditional sense, their induction is the primary goal of therapeutic interventions aimed at treating date palm pollen allergy.
