Immunoglobulin heavy constant alpha 1 (IGHA1) encodes the constant region of the alpha heavy chain of immunoglobulin A1 (IgA1), the major class of antibody found in mucosal secretions. IgA1 plays a central role in adaptive immunity by binding antigens and facilitating their elimination, particularly at mucosal surfaces such as the gut, respiratory tract, and urogenital tract. Structurally, IgA1 features a unique, extended hinge region that confers flexibility but also susceptibility to specific bacterial proteases. IGHA1 expression is primarily restricted to B lymphocytes and plasma cells. Alterations in IGHA1 production or structure have clinical significance in infections, autoimmune diseases, and plasma cell malignancies. IGHA1 itself is not considered a classic drug target, but its presence and quantity have utility as a diagnostic biomarker in immunodeficiency and hematological cancers[1][2][3][4][5].
