Immunoglobulin heavy diversity 3-16 (IGHD3-16) is one of several human immunoglobulin heavy chain diversity (D) gene segments that contribute to the enormous variability of antibodies produced by B lymphocytes. These D gene segments are not translated into proteins by themselves, but are instead recombined with variable (V) and joining (J) gene segments during early B cell development through V(D)J recombination. This process generates highly diverse immunoglobulin heavy chain variable regions, which, when paired with light chains, produce the antigen-binding diversity fundamental to adaptive immunity. IGHD3-16 itself is not a therapeutic target and is not associated with any drugs, diseases, or safety concerns. Its only direct function is contributing sequence diversity to the third complementarity-determining region (CDR3) of immunoglobulin heavy chains.
