Overview
Immunoglobulin heavy diversity 4-4 (IGHD4-4) is a short gene segment within the immunoglobulin heavy chain locus (IGH) on chromosome 14. It encodes a D (diversity) region, which, through somatic recombination with variable (V) and joining (J) segments, contributes to the enormous diversity of antibody variable regions in B lymphocytes. The genomic diversity of IGHD4-4—and other immunoglobulin D segments—enables the generation of a wide range of antibodies, critical to the adaptive immune response. IGHD4-4 itself is not expressed as a protein but provides template DNA during the V(D)J recombination process in developing B cells.
