Immunoglobulin heavy diversity 7-27 (IGHD7-27) is a short DNA segment of the immunoglobulin heavy chain locus, located on chromosome 14 (14q32). It functions as one of several diversity (D) gene segments required for V(D)J recombination in developing B cells. During this process, IGHD7-27 can be randomly joined to variable (V) and joining (J) gene segments, contributing to the antigen-binding region of antibodies and thus helping to generate immune diversity. The proper rearrangement and combination of these gene segments underlie the immense variability of antibody specificities produced in humans. IGHD7-27 itself does not encode a protein or receptor, but is a genomic fragment integrated into mature immunoglobulin heavy chain genes following recombination.
