Overview

Immunoglobulin heavy diversity 5-24 (IGHD5-24) is a DNA gene segment (not a protein or receptor) that encodes a diversity (D) region used in V(D)J recombination to generate the variable region of the immunoglobulin (antibody) heavy chain in B cells[2][3][4]. During B cell development, a single V (variable), D (diversity), and J (joining) gene segment are recombined to form the antibody's antigen recognition site, a process essential for broad immune recognition[1][2][3]. The IGHD5-24 gene segment is one of several D segments in the human IGH locus and is not expressed as a standalone protein nor does it act as a receptor or enzyme[4]. Some D segments are annotated as "non-functional" or pseudogenes, and IGHD5-24 is listed as "non-functional" in some sources[4], meaning it may not participate productively in recombination or translate into part of the antibody protein.
