Immunoglobulin heavy variable 1-17 is a gene located within the human immunoglobulin heavy chain locus (chromosome 14) that encodes the variable region of an immunoglobulin heavy chain. IGHV1-17 is classified as a pseudogene, meaning it does not encode a functional, expressed protein product. During B cell development, immunoglobulin heavy chain variable (IGHV), diversity (IGHD), and joining (IGHJ) genes undergo V(D)J recombination to generate the variable domain of the antibody heavy chain, which forms the antigen-binding region of immunoglobulins. The functional diversity of antibodies is critically dependent on the availability of productive IGHV genes; however, IGHV1-17 does not contribute to antibody diversity due to its lack of functional protein expression and is commonly annotated as non-functional[1][6][2].
