The resulting variable region, when paired with a light chain, forms the antigen-binding site of the antibody[4][5]. Variability arises both from genetic recombination and somatic hypermutation after antigen exposure, contributing to high affinity and specificity of the immune response[1][2][5]. IGHV1-2 is one of many variable region genes and shows polymorphic allelic diversity in humans[3].
