Immunoglobulin heavy variable 2-70D (IGHV2-70D) is a gene segment located within the immunoglobulin heavy chain locus on chromosome 14. It encodes part of the variable region of the heavy chain of immunoglobulins (antibodies) produced by B cells. This variable region lies at the amino-terminal end of the antibody and is directly involved in binding antigens, contributing to the diversity and specificity of the adaptive immune response. The IGHV2-70D segment, like other IGHV genes, undergoes somatic V-(D)-J recombination, which generates a multitude of unique antibodies. Genetic variation in IGHV genes, including IGHV2-70D, can contribute to population diversity in antibody responses and susceptibility or resistance to certain diseases, but IGHV2-70D itself is not currently considered a direct therapeutic target. IGHV2-70D is part of a large and highly polymorphic gene family, which undergoes complex rearrangements in the immune system to facilitate a diverse antibody repertoire. Studies show that structural variants and single nucleotide polymorphisms in the IGH locus shape immune responses and disease outcomes, though no drug or therapeutic specifically targets IGHV2-70D.
