Immunoglobulin heavy variable 3-23 pseudogene (often abbreviated as IGHV3-23P) is a nonfunctional genomic sequence belonging to the immunoglobulin heavy chain variable region gene family. Pseudogenes such as this are characterized by their inability to encode a functional protein product due to disabling mutations like premature stop codons, frameshifts, or altered splicing sites. The IGHV locus in humans comprises both functional variable gene segments, which undergo V(D)J recombination to contribute to antibody diversity, and nonfunctional pseudogenes, which may serve as genetic reservoirs for recombination but are not themselves translated into functional immunoglobulin chains. This pseudogene does not participate in immune responses, signal transduction, or serve as a therapeutic drug target, and is not implicated in human disease pathways as a causative or therapeutic entity. Its main relevance is as a marker of gene family organization and evolution, rather than clinical utility.
