Overview

Immunoglobulin heavy variable 3-36 (IGHV3-36) is a gene segment within the immunoglobulin heavy chain variable (IGHV) region located on chromosome 14. It encodes the variable domain portion of the heavy chain in antibodies, which pairs with light chain variable regions to form the antigen-binding site of immunoglobulins. IGHV gene segments, including IGHV3-36, are assembled by V(D)J recombination in developing B cells, producing immense diversity in the antibody repertoire that is essential for adaptive immunity[3][5]. When present in functional B-cell receptors or secreted antibodies, the protein product enables precise antigen recognition. IGHV3-36 itself is not a direct drug target, but its gene usage can influence antibody specificity, affinity, and may be studied for its role in immune repertoire diversity, infectious disease response, or B-cell malignancies[4][5]. Note: IGHV3-36 is sometimes annotated as a pseudogene in certain genome builds, meaning that in some individuals or reference sequences it may not encode a functional V segment[1]. However, the IGHV gene family overall is vital for immune function.
