Overview

Immunoglobulin heavy variable 3-49 is a variable domain segment of the immunoglobulin heavy chain locus, part of the repertoire of variable (V) genes assembled in B cells during V-(D)-J recombination to generate antibody diversity[1][4][6]. This gene segment encodes the variable region of the heavy chain, which, together with associated light chain variable domains, contributes to the antigen-binding site of antibodies, enabling specific recognition of diverse antigens as part of the adaptive immune system. The variable regions also undergo somatic hypermutation after antigen exposure, supporting affinity maturation for improved immune response[1][2][4][6]. IGHV3-49 itself is not considered a classic "therapeutic target" such as a receptor or enzyme, but is one of many germline immunoglobulin variable genes that enable adaptive immunity[1][4][6]. These genes can be subject to investigation in studies of immune repertoire diversity, autoimmunity, or B cell malignancy, but do not function as pharmacological targets[4].
