Immunoglobulin heavy variable 3-73 (IGHV3-73) is a member of the immunoglobulin heavy variable (IGHV) gene family, which encodes the variable domain of the heavy chain of antibodies. The variable domain of an immunoglobulin heavy chain, produced by V-(D)-J recombination, forms part of the antigen-binding site of antibodies, contributing to immune diversity and specificity. IGHV3-73 itself is one of many functional variable region genes in the human IGH locus (chromosome 14q32.33), which collectively allow for a vast repertoire of antibody specificities by rearranging with diversity (D) and joining (J) gene segments in developing B cells. The gene is essential for the adaptive immune response but is not itself a receptor, enzyme, or direct therapeutic target. Its usage and allelic variants can be important in studies of immune repertoire diversity and may serve as biomarkers in certain immune-related diseases and hematological cancers.
