Overview

Immunoglobulin heavy variable 4-31 (IGHV4-31) is a gene segment encoding the variable region of the heavy chain in human immunoglobulins (antibodies)[1]. This region, together with a paired light chain variable region, forms the antigen-binding site of antibodies, critical for specific antigen recognition. IGHV4-31 is one of many variable gene segments within the immunoglobulin heavy chain locus, which undergoes V(D)J recombination and somatic hypermutation in B lymphocytes to generate antibody diversity[1][4]. The product is not itself a receptor, enzyme, or standalone molecule but a genetic building block for antibody variable domains. IGHV4-31 has no known role as a direct therapeutic target, nor are there drugs that specifically interact with it. Its main biological function is to participate in the adaptive immune response by providing specificity for antigen binding as part of a complete antibody[1][4]. IGHV gene segments, including IGHV4-31, can influence disease susceptibility and immune repertoire variation, but are not used independently as biomarkers, drug targets, or recognized safety concerns[4].
