Overview

Immunoglobulin heavy variable 5-51 (IGHV5-51) is a member of the immunoglobulin heavy chain variable region gene family, encoding part of the variable domain that determines antibody specificity for antigens. The protein segment participates in the formation of the antigen-binding site of antibodies ("paratope"), together with the variable region of the light chain. IGHV5-51 is one of the two major VH5 gene family segments in humans[7]. Its allelic variants contribute to the diversity and affinity of antibodies produced during humoral immune responses to infection, vaccination, or disease states. IGHV5-51 is incorporated into IgG, IgM, or other antibody isotypes via V-(D)-J recombination and can undergo somatic hypermutation to refine antigen recognition. It is not a direct drug target, but it has important roles in the genomics and proteomics of adaptive immunity[1][4][5][7][12]. While often called a "receptor" in immunology, IGHV5-51 itself is actually a gene encoding a portion of the immunoglobulin molecule that may be present in B-cell receptors (membrane-bound immunoglobulins); it is not a distinct therapeutic receptor or "target" as defined in pharmacology[1][4][5][12].
