Immunoglobulin kappa variable 1-12 (IGKV1-12) is a gene encoding for the variable region of the immunoglobulin (antibody) light chain kappa. This variable domain is a component of the antigen-binding site, generated by V-(D)-J recombination and capable of additional diversity by somatic hypermutation following antigen exposure. Light chain variable regions such as IGKV1-12, in combination with heavy chain variable domains, endow antibodies with high specificity for antigens. IGKV1-12 is part of the broader immunoglobulin superfamily but is not a druggable target or a unique disease receptor/enzyme; rather, it is one of many variable gene segments involved in the adaptive immune system’s recognition of pathogens[1][3][4].
