Overview

Immunoglobulin kappa variable 1-17 is a protein domain encoded by the IGKV1-17 gene that constitutes part of the variable region of the immunoglobulin light chain in humans. This region plays a central role in antigen recognition as part of antibodies produced by B lymphocytes. Immunoglobulins, also known as antibodies, function both as cell surface receptors (on B cells) and as secreted proteins in the bloodstream, coordinating the humoral arm of the adaptive immune system. The variable region, including IGKV1-17, enables the diverse and specific binding of foreign antigens. Production of immunoglobulins with this variable region arises through V-(D)-J gene rearrangement and somatic hypermutation, processes essential for immune diversity and affinity maturation[1][3][7]. IGKV1-17 thus provides specificity to the antibody repertoire but is not itself a therapeutic target or receptor in the traditional pharmacological sense. Key attributes: - IGKV1-17 is highly expressed in B cells and is detected as a secreted protein throughout most tissues[4]. - It is not implicated as a primary direct target in drug therapy or as an established biomarker. - Mutations or aberrations in IGKV1-17 have not been linked as primary drivers of disease, though as part of the immunoglobulin variable gene family, changes here may impact immune recognition capabilities[1][3].
