Immunoglobulin kappa variable 2-23 (IGKV2-23) encodes a variable region of the kappa light chain of human immunoglobulins. Immunoglobulins (antibodies) are heterodimeric proteins composed of two heavy and two light chains, produced by B lymphocytes and essential for adaptive immunity. The variable domain encoded by IGKV2-23 contributes to the antigen-binding site of kappa chain-containing antibodies, allowing specific recognition of diverse antigens. The diversity of antibodies is generated through somatic recombination of V, J, and C gene segments in the immunoglobulin loci, followed by somatic hypermutations that allow affinity maturation after exposure to antigen. IGKV2-23 belongs to the larger family of immunoglobulin variable region segments clustered in the kappa light chain locus on chromosome 2p11.2. The IGKV2 family is one of several kappa variable segment families used to generate the combinatorial diversity of the immune response[1][4].
