Immunoglobulin kappa variable 2-40 (IGKV2-40) encodes the variable region segment of the kappa light chain in human antibodies[2][3]. Immunoglobulin light chains, along with heavy chains, form the antigen-binding domains of antibodies, crucial for immune recognition and response. Each B cell randomly assembles V (variable), J (joining), and C (constant) gene segments—such as IGKV2-40—via V(D)J recombination, generating high antibody diversity[2][3]. IGKV2-40 protein product is involved in antigen binding, forming part of the antigen-binding site in immunoglobulins[2][6]. Its expression as part of specific antibodies can be elevated during immune responses, but the segment itself is not a standalone therapeutic target nor directly modulated by drugs[2][6]. Alterations in its usage or expression may reflect immune status in some disease states[6].
