Immunoglobulin kappa variable 2D-28 (IGKV2D-28) is a protein encoded by the IGKV2D-28 gene located on chromosome 2 within the immunoglobulin kappa locus (2p11.2). It encodes the variable region of the kappa (κ) light chain in immunoglobulins, crucial for the formation of the antigen recognition domain of antibodies. Immunoglobulins, also known as antibodies, are composed of two identical heavy chains and two identical light chains that participate in recognizing and neutralizing antigens as part of the humoral immune response. The variable domains of immunoglobulin heavy and light chains are generated by somatic recombination and are responsible for the diversity and specificity of antibody-antigen interactions. Expression levels of IGKV2D-28 have been explored as a candidate biomarker in disorders such as gestational diabetes mellitus, highlighting its potential utility in research and clinical diagnostics, although not as a direct therapeutic target.
