Immunoglobulin kappa variable 3-31 is a gene segment encoding one of the many variable domains of the kappa light chain in human immunoglobulins (antibodies). Variable gene segments such as IGKV3-31 provide the sequence diversity necessary for antigen-specificity in the adaptive immune response. During B-cell development, IGKV gene segments recombine with joining (J) and constant (C) gene segments to generate a functional light chain, which pairs with a heavy chain to form the antigen-binding site of immunoglobulins. IGKV3-31 is not a direct therapeutic target, but the variable region it encodes may be incorporated into engineered monoclonal antibodies that have therapeutic relevance, depending on the antigen they are designed to bind[1][2][3][4].
Drugs do not act on IGKV3-31 itself; rather, IGKV3-31 is used to encode the antigen-binding variable domain in engineered antibodies (biotherapeutics), which then act on other targets.
