Overview

Immunoglobulin kappa variable 3D-7 is a variable region gene segment, part of the immunoglobulin kappa light chain gene locus, located on chromosome 2. This locus provides the coding sequence for the variable domain of kappa light chains, which—when productively rearranged and expressed—contributes to the generation of antibodies with unique antigen specificity. The IGKV3D-7 gene segment is assembled during the V-(D)-J recombination process and contributes to the complementarity-determining region (CDR) diversity of immunoglobulins produced by B cells. Its protein product forms part of the immunoglobulin complex in the extracellular space and plasma membrane, enabling antigen binding in the adaptive immune system[2][3]. Some sources indicate that related variable region genes can be functional, non-functional, or have open reading frame (ORF) status; IGKV3D-7 is regarded as a typical, non-pseudogene variable segment[2][3][4]. The IGKV (immunoglobulin kappa variable) gene family includes numerous similar genes, of which some are functional, some are open reading frames (ORFs), and others are pseudogenes[3]. "L25" is an alternative name found in some literature but is not the official gene symbol[2]. While IGKV3-7 with a similar name is often classified as a non-functional ORF[1], IGKV3D-7 is referenced as a protein-coding, potentially functional variable region[2][3], based on standard immunogenetic nomenclature.
