Target intelligence / Profile preview
Immunoglobulin kappa variable 6-21 (IGKV6-21) is a gene segment encoding the variable region of the kappa light chain of immunoglobulins. As part of the immune system’s humoral response, the variable region contributes to antigen recognition and binding specificity of antibodies produced by B lymphocytes. The IGKV6-21 gene segment participates in V-(D)-J recombination, the process that assembles functional immunoglobulin molecules capable of identifying and binding to specific antigens. Most references identify IGKV6-21 as non-functional (also termed an ORF, or open reading frame), suggesting it is not typically used in productive antibody synthesis but may be rearranged in some cases. It does not serve as a classical therapeutic target or biomarker on its own, and no drugs directly target this gene segment. The overall family is critically important for the diversity and specificity of antibodies, but IGKV6-21 itself holds significance mainly as a member of the kappa light chain gene repertoire. IGKV6-21 is located at chromosome 2p11.2 within the IGK locus, which contains many similar gene segments, and is a paralog of IGKV6D-21. It is not a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor. Common use in biomedical research focuses on functional immunoglobulin genes rather than specific variable region gene segments. For structured annotation, IGKV6-21 should not be classified as a classical drug target or disease biomarker, but only as part of the immunoglobulin gene family.
