Overview

Immunoglobulin M (IgM) is a class of antibody that plays a critical role in the body's immune response. It is the first antibody produced by the adaptive immune system upon exposure to a foreign antigen, making it essential for early defense against infections. IgM exists as both a membrane-bound monomer on B cells and as a secreted pentamer in serum. Its pentameric structure allows high avidity binding to antigens, and it is highly efficient at activating the complement system. IgM is primarily found in blood and lymph fluid and is used diagnostically to detect recent infections.
