Immunoglobulin replacement therapy involves the administration of pooled human antibodies—primarily IgG—from healthy donors to patients with primary or secondary antibody deficiencies. It is not itself a drug target but rather serves as replacement for missing immune function in individuals who cannot produce sufficient antibodies on their own. The main goal is infection prevention; it does not stimulate the patient's own immune system but provides passive protection against pathogens. Therapy can be given intravenously (IVIG) or subcutaneously (SCIG), typically on an ongoing basis since the underlying deficiency persists throughout life. While generally safe and effective, there are potential risks associated with any blood-derived product.

As a therapeutic product: - Provides passive immunity by supplying functional antibodies from pooled human plasma to patients with deficient antibody production. - In autoimmune disease settings, can modulate immune responses through various mechanisms including Fc receptor blockade and anti-inflammatory effects.
