Immunomodulation through secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokines

Molecular classification
Other
01

Overview

This term refers to the *process* by which immune cells, including macrophages, dendritic cells, and lymphocytes, release cytokines such as interleukin-4 (IL-4), interleukin-10 (IL-10), interleukin-13 (IL-13), IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra), and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) to control and suppress excessive inflammatory responses. These cytokines act as immunomodulators, regulating the balance between pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory signals to maintain tissue homeostasis and prevent immune-mediated pathology. Unlike classic molecular targets (e.g., \"tumor necrosis factor receptor\"), this \"target\" describes a system-wide regulatory function carried out by multiple molecules. Certain drugs and biologics, as well as probiotics, may exert therapeutic effects by enhancing anti-inflammatory cytokine secretion, but the process itself cannot be considered a singular molecular target for drug development.

Mechanism of action

Upregulation of anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-4, IL-10, IL-13, IL-1 receptor antagonist, TGF-β) to dampen pro-inflammatory signaling pathways and reduce tissue damage

05

Safety considerations

Risk of immunosuppression (predisposition to infections)Balance with pro-inflammatory cytokines is critical—excess anti-inflammation can dampen host defense against pathogens
