There are currently numerous therapeutic drugs targeting individual cytokines (like TNF inhibitors, IL-6 inhibitors) or their receptors, and monitoring circulating levels of certain cytokines is important for patient selection and efficacy in clinical settings[6]. This entry is not a valid molecular target per se, but describes a mechanism or pathway involving many molecules. For structured therapeutic targeting and drug development, each distinct cytokine/growth factor (such as "Interleukin-2" or "Vascular endothelial growth factor") or their receptors should be considered as individual canonical targets.
