Overview

Immunomodulation via paracrine signaling by mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) refers to the process by which MSCs influence immune responses not through direct cell-to-cell contact, but rather through the secretion of soluble factors and extracellular vesicles. These secreted products—collectively known as the MSC "secretome"—include cytokines, chemokines, growth factors, microRNAs (miRNAs), and exosomes that modulate inflammation, promote tissue repair, and regulate both innate and adaptive immune responses.
