Importin-8 (IPO8) is a member of the importin-beta family and functions as a nuclear transport receptor responsible for importing proteins bearing classical nuclear localization signals into the nucleus, via the nuclear pore complex, in a Ran-dependent manner. It functions either autonomously or as an adapter with other importins, and mediates nuclear import for a wide variety of proteins, including key regulators of gene expression, signal transduction, and cellular function. IPO8 has been implicated in transporting Argonaute-microRNA complexes, SMAD transcription factors, and other cargos critical for cellular signaling pathways. Mutations in IPO8 are associated with Viss syndrome and Duane-radial ray syndrome[1][2][4][5].
