Improvement of lipid metabolism

01

Overview

Improvement of lipid metabolism refers to the physiological and therapeutic objective of optimizing the synthesis, transport, and degradation of lipids within the body to maintain homeostasis and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease [1, 2]. It is not a specific molecular target, such as a receptor or enzyme, but rather a broad biological process or clinical outcome sought in the management of metabolic disorders like dyslipidemia and obesity [4, 10]. Pharmacological interventions achieve this improvement by acting on distinct molecular entities, such as HMG-CoA reductase (targeted by statins), Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (targeted by fibrates), and Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (targeted by monoclonal antibodies) [11, 14]. Clinically, these improvements are monitored through biomarkers like LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, which reflect the functional efficiency of lipid handling pathways [3, 9]. Because the term describes a complex system-level effect involving multiple protein interactions and metabolic pathways, it is classified as a therapeutic endpoint rather than a discrete drug target.

Mechanism of action

The improvement is achieved through various mechanisms depending on the drug used, including the inhibition of cholesterol synthesis, the activation of fatty acid oxidation, the enhancement of lipoprotein clearance, and the inhibition of dietary fat absorption [2, 11].
