Overview
Inactivated poliovirus type 1 (IPV type 1) is a purified preparation of poliovirus serotype 1 (Mahoney strain), grown in cell culture and chemically inactivated with formaldehyde. It is used as a key antigenic component in inactivated polio vaccines, which are designed to induce protective immunity against poliovirus type 1, the main cause of paralytic poliomyelitis worldwide. The inactivated viral particles are noninfectious but stimulate the immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies, preventing both symptomatic and asymptomatic poliovirus infections. IPV type 1 is an essential public health tool for polio eradication and is delivered alone or in combination with other vaccines.

Mechanism of action
Vaccine exposure to the inactivated poliovirus type 1 antigen induces the immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies against type 1 poliovirus, conferring protective immunity when exposed to the wild-type virus. The immune response is primarily humoral (antibody-mediated), blocking viral entry and viremia.
