Inactivated poliovirus type 1 antigen is a non-infectious viral component used in vaccines to prevent poliomyelitis caused by poliovirus type 1. It is typically derived from the Mahoney strain, which is grown in cell culture and then inactivated with formaldehyde to eliminate pathogenicity while preserving its immunogenic D-antigen sites [CDC, WHO]. Upon administration, the antigen is recognized by the host's immune system, triggering the production of specific neutralizing IgG antibodies [StatPearls]. These antibodies provide systemic protection by preventing the virus from spreading to the central nervous system during a subsequent infection [PubMed]. As type 1 poliovirus is historically the most common cause of paralytic polio, this antigen is a vital part of the trivalent inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) and various combination vaccines used in global health programs [FDA]. The inactivated poliovirus type 1 antigen acts as an immunogen that stimulates the host's immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies. Upon injection, the antigen is processed by antigen-presenting cells and presented to T-helper cells, which in turn activate B-cells to produce IgG antibodies specific to the poliovirus type 1 capsid. These antibodies circulate systemically and neutralize the virus if the individual is later exposed to the wild-type strain, preventing viral entry into the central nervous system and the development of paralytic poliomyelitis [StatPearls, PubMed].
