Overview

Inactivated poliovirus type 2 antigen is a primary component of the Inactivated Poliovirus Vaccine (IPV), derived from the wild-type Lansing or MEF-1 strain that has been rendered non-infectious through formalin treatment. The antigen consists of the viral capsid proteins (VP1, VP2, VP3, and VP4) which maintain their structural integrity to be recognized by the host immune system. Its primary biological role is to serve as an immunogen that stimulates the production of serum neutralizing antibodies, specifically targeting the type 2 serotype of the poliovirus. By inducing a robust IgG response, the antigen provides systemic protection against poliomyelitis, a debilitating disease characterized by muscle weakness and paralysis resulting from viral destruction of motor neurons. In clinical practice, this antigen is administered as part of monovalent or multivalent vaccines to ensure population-wide immunity, particularly as type 2 wild poliovirus has been declared eradicated, making the transition from oral vaccines to inactivated vaccines critical for preventing vaccine-derived outbreaks.
