Inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) antigens consist of killed poliovirus strains of serotypes 1 (Mahoney), 2 (MEF-1), and 3 (Saukett) (CDC, 2023). These antigens are the primary components of the Salk vaccine and are used to induce protective immunity against poliomyelitis, a debilitating disease caused by poliovirus infection that can lead to irreversible paralysis (WHO, 2022). Unlike the oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV), IPV contains inactivated virus that cannot replicate or revert to a virulent form, making it safer in terms of preventing vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis (StatPearls, 2023). Upon administration, these antigens are recognized by the host's immune system, leading to the production of specific neutralizing antibodies (primarily IgG) that circulate in the blood (FDA, 2020). These antibodies prevent the virus from entering the central nervous system if the individual is later exposed to wild poliovirus (CDC, 2023). IPV is often administered as part of combination vaccines, such as Pediarix or Pentacel, to simplify childhood immunization schedules and maintain high population immunity (FDA, 2020).
Inactivated poliovirus antigens stimulate the immune system to produce serum neutralizing antibodies (primarily IgG) against poliovirus serotypes 1, 2, and 3 (CDC, 2023). This humoral immune response provides protection against paralytic poliomyelitis by preventing the virus from spreading from the gastrointestinal tract to the central nervous system (StatPearls, 2023).
