Increase in cerebral blood flow

01

Overview

Increase in cerebral blood flow describes a physiological state or functional response wherein the volume of blood passing through brain tissue per unit time is elevated. This phenomenon can result from physiological processes (e.g., increased neuronal activity via neurovascular coupling), pharmacologic intervention (e.g., vasodilators), or pathologic states (e.g., hypercapnia-induced vasodilation or autoregulatory breakthrough in hypertension). Regulation of cerebral blood flow is multifactorial, involving arteriolar smooth muscle tone, neural and metabolic signaling, endothelial mediators (nitric oxide, eicosanoids, endothelins), and auto-regulatory responses to perfusion pressure, but no single receptor, enzyme, or protein is solely responsible for the process[1][2][3][4].
